Maarja Nuut & Nicolas Stocker
Maarja Nuut and Nicolas Stocker present new material that seeks a hypnotic quality and a feeling of constant mutation
Maarja Nuut is a singer, violinist, electronic artist, and composer whose work spans many rich musical worlds. Classically trained, she has since delved into several disparate genres: Hindustani classical music, Estonian archival sounds and ethnomusicological research, and, more recently, the outer limits of electronic and experimental dance music. Fueled by her instincts and curiosity, her exploration stems from an inner need and a desire to probe each world’s musical language, techniques, and expressive qualities – elements she swirls into her mesmerizing art.
Nicolas Stocker is a drummer and composer whose use of polyrhythms and “spectral” detours into melodic territory make his sound uniquely his own. He is a co-leader of the post-genre group KALI Trio and a core member of Nik Bärtsch's Mobile. His many projects and collaborations include working with Ricardo Villalobos, Areni Agbabian, and Whitch’n’Monk. In 2018, he released his first solo album and was dubbed “a rising star in Europe” by Downbeat Magazine. Based in Zürich, Stocker has toured extensively throughout Europe, the USA, and Asia, performing at various festivals and venues, from classical concert houses to underground techno clubs.
At unda festival, Maarja and Nicolas will present new material exploring the intersection of rhythm and expectation. By shifting beats and exploring textures, they aim to dismantle familiar paths and seek a hypnotic quality that creates a feeling of constant mutation.
